Throughout December 24, the children of medical counselor Stahlbaum were at no time allowed into the parlor, much less into the adjoining ballroom. Fritz and Marie huddled together in a corner of the back room. It was already evening, but no light had yet been brought in, as was always the custom on that special day; so they felt afraid. Fritz, whispering secretly, revealed to his younger sister (she had just turned seven) that since early morning he had been hearing noises, murmurs, and soft knockings in the closed rooms. He also told her that shortly before, a dark little man with a large box under his arm had stealthily passed through the corridor, but he knew well that it was none other than Godfather Drosselmeier. Marie began clapping with joy and exclaimed - Oh! What could Godfather Drosselmeier have made for us? Surely it's something very beautiful!
