Descripción

Matthew G. Lewis. (1775 - 1818). British writer, playwright, and politician known as Monk Lewis after his first work, The Monk (1796), in which he denounced the Spanish Inquisition and which made him popular. The Monk, well-received by most of the population, was heavily criticized for being obscene among British intellectuals, which forced the author to tone down the second edition of 1798, published when he was already a member of Parliament. It is a gothic novel that satirizes religious hypocrisy. Lord Byron and the Marquis de Sade approved the novel in their respective writings. The Monk was championed by André Breton and Antonin Artaud as the best gothic novel and one of the greatest achievements of Romanticism.
