Miss Arundell is a wealthy elderly spinster whom her nephews wish to see dead so they can relieve their financial distress. When she suffers an accident by falling down the stairs, everyone attributes it to the rubber ball left by Bob, her dog. But the old woman is suspicious, and thinks they have tried to murder her. On April 17th, she writes a letter to Poirot requesting his help, but he doesn't receive it, mysteriously, until June 28th. By then, Miss Arundell has been murdered, and the only witness to the crime is Bob, her beloved pet.
