Es también una obra metaficcional sobre un autor que no encuentra sentido en vivir la vida si no puede escribirla y que no solo es incapaz de escribir, sino que sospecha además que él mismo no es sino un personaje dentro de una novela. McCarthy, is the draft of a novel based on Lowry's trip to Mexico in 1945-1946, which ended with the arrest and deportation of the writer and his wife after a nightmarish encounter with corrupt immigration authorities. On its most immediate level, the title refers to the Mexican term for the bribe paid to expedite a bureaucratic procedure and is tied to the protagonist's legal troubles. More broadly, it also represents his difficulty in escaping his past and paying the fine--or debt--that still haunts him. La mordida / The Bite is a descent into the abyss of being, a journey through the themes that obsessed Lowry: art, identity, the nature of existence, politics, and alcoholism.
