Descripción

Elita’s dad didn’t show up for his visit. Elita is trapped in a cloud of sadness and anger as she tries to understand why. Fortunately, Ms. K and Uncle Finny are there to help. Using the metaphor of a wave, they help Elita understand and talk about her dad’s ups and downs, recognize and hold onto loving memories, and let her know that she is not alone.

Millions of young children live in families with a parent who is struggling due to trauma (from adverse childhood experiences or ACEs), mental illness (PTSD, depression, bipolar disorder), or addiction. Mama’s Waves and Papa’s Waves seek to support these children and jumpstart important conversations that help them heal.

Elita’s story was written to facilitate conversations children need to have. When a family member struggles, young children worry about them and often have many difficult questions. Children need the help of adults inside and outside their families:

  • To have the language for the challenges their parents face.
  • To know that it is okay to talk about the good times and the hard times.
  • To understand why their parents are not always there for them.
  • And most importantly, to keep good memories alive, as these memories shape how children view themselves as worthy of love.

Papa’s Waves shows us that these conversations are possible, important, and therapeutic, and help heal and acknowledge children's need for connection.

Although the book was specifically written for children whose parents struggle with emotional waves, Elita’s story can help other children empathetically understand the challenges many other families face.

Mama’s Waves / Papa’s Waves is the first book in the Elita Linda series; developed by the same team that created Once I Was Very Very Scared, When You Were Not With Me, Holdin Pott, and the Trinka and Juan series.
