Lengua materna is a collection of narrative essays on national literature where the terms nation, literature, and essay are explored through the forms of fiction. In addition to answering the above questions, the texts address writing scenes by José Martí, Lydia Cabrera, Guillermo Cabrera Infante, or Lezama Lima, among other authors, and peripheral materials such as a record of 19th-century duels of honor, a police report in the 18th-century Havana press, or the first scientific book written in Cuba, a navigation treatise from 1673.
Osdany Morales (Nueva Paz, 1981) is the author of the short story collections Minuciosas puertas estrechas (2007), Papyrus (2012), and Antes de los aviones (2013), the poetry volume El pasado es un pueblo solitario (2015), and the novel Zozobra (2018). He has received the Premio David, the Premio Alejo Carpentier, and the Premio Internacional de Cuento Casa de Teatro.
