Winner of the Femina Award 2024
By the winner of the Anna Seghers, British Academy, and Best Unpublished Novel from the Chilean Ministry of Cultures awards, and Man Booker International finalist
«With the strength of an indomitable voice, Alia Trabucco Zerán constructs a most lucid, ruthless, and brutal novel.» -Federico Falco Life tends to be like that—a drip, a drip, a drip, a drip, and then we wonder, perplexed, how we ended up soaked. Estela leaves her mother in the south to work in a family's home in Santiago de Chile and stays there for the next seven years, cleaning and raising an anxiety-ridden girl, whose death we learn of at the beginning of the novel. Like a Greek tragedy, the tension grows on every page, with every character or element: the stray dog, the rats, the "sir's" unspeakable confession, the appearance of Carlos, the poison, the gun, leading to an outcome as powerful as it is inevitable. ENGLISH DESCRIPTION The book that inspired the upcoming adapted film on Netflix ONE OF THE MOST ANTICIPATED BOOKS OF THE YEAR, TRANSLATED IN THIRTEEN COUNTRIES. Listed on Babelia's Best Books of 2023
