Descripción

The history of grammar is far from having followed a linear and clear path. From the pre-Socratic thinkers and the Sophists, we have observations about language, its peculiarities and potentials, but it was not until the last centuries BCE that a body of knowledge about grammar emerged that could be properly considered mēthesis, a discipline. In fact, it is in the work of Dionysius Thrax, *Tēchnē Grammatikē*, where we first find a characterization of it, and the attribution to such a body of knowledge of technical qualities. Indeed, Dionysius tells us that "grammar is the knowledge of what is said, especially by poets and prose writers. Its parts are six: first, careful reading according to prosody; second, explanation of poetic figures, if any; third, interpretation in usual terms of rare words and arguments; fourth, search for etymology; fifth, exposition of analogy; sixth, criticism of poems, which is the most beautiful part of all of grammar." Considering this work as an inescapable reference of *grammatikē tĕchnē*, this compilation of articles opens up the perspective of the reflections that preceded it, from the Sophists, Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, to some lines that received its legacy, such as those proposed by Epicurus, by Sextus Empiricus and by Aulus Gellius.
