Descripción

A literary revelation: A surprising novel about three generations of women and their tumultuous relationships with money, love, beauty and social convention.

"I was fascinated by its lucid portrait of the hypocrisy of conservative Spanish society, but I also laughed out loud at its incisive view of contemporary romantic relationships [...]. Sevillana has it all: plot, ideas, lyricism." -Luna Miguel

Sevillana is the story of Alejandra Díez de la Cortina, a young interior designer about to marry Gonzalo, her childhood sweetheart. Originally from Seville but now living and working in Madrid, Alejandra finds herself in the same situation as many other young women in her social circle: With her romantic future secure, she begins to feel bored by the routine of hunting parties, horseback rides, and endless rounds of golf. It's at one of those interminable social events that she draws dangerously close to one of Gonzalo's friends.

Just as integral to the plot is the story of Alejandra's grandmother, newly widowed and lonely and looking forward to her granddaughter's wedding. And finally, there is Alejandra's mother, who has a secret obsession and is more irascible than ever as she finds that a life of appearances, parties, and prejudices no longer fulfills her. What links these three generations of women? Why do her mother's fears weigh so heavily on Alejandra's decisions? Charo Lagares's first novel is an exciting and entertaining look at relationships in conservative upper-class Sevillian family.
