Julio Verne was born in Nantes in 1828. He studied law in Paris, where he met Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas père, and later his son. Under the influence of Edgar Allan Poe—whom he read in Baudelaire’s translations—he began to take an interest in writing and science fiction. In 1857, he married a young widow with two children. He worked as a stockbroker until the highly successful publication of Five Weeks in a Balloon (1863), which would be followed by works such as Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864); Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas (1869); Around the World in Eighty Days (1872), based on the journey of American George Francis Train (1829-1904); The Mysterious Island (1874), and The Steam House (1880). He shared an editor with Balzac and George Sand. Throughout his life, he made many trips that served as inspiration for some of his novels, such as his trip to the United States or his voyages aboard his own boat. He died in 1905.
