Descripción

Yolanda Garcia--her nickname is Yo--has proven herself a writer with a highly successful first novel whose "characters" are her family, friends, and lovers. While Yo enjoys her celebrity, her loved ones find themselves "naked" and recognizable to the world in their new public life.

What is the result? Those who were "victimized by fiction" want to tell their side of the story. And so they do in this one. Julia Alvarez's joyful, poignant, and well-conceived new novel, Yo! is about the conflict between art and reality, intellect and emotions, and acculturation in the United States and her own Dominican roots. Here, Yo's three sisters, her mother and father, her grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and husbands star in their versions of Yo's true life. Alvarez makes us believe them all and the indomitable Yo, whose creative impulse is rooted in her childhood memories and her two contrasting cultures.
